Aggadah

Pathways in Midrash and Aggadah

The second series to be published in the Pathways in Torah program is Pathways in Midrash and Aggadah, due for publication during the course of 5772. Despite the incredible beauty and depth of the Midrash and Aggadah, probably no literature is misunderstood by modern audiences, who have been often misled into thinking that one should take Midrashim and Aggadot literally! Finally, an expert in the field sets things straight for modern audiences, and lays out a logical and comprehensible program for understanding Midrash and Aggadah.

This set begins with an introductory volume: Pathways in Midrash and Aggadah, by Alex Hayman. This introductory volume puts Midrash and Aggadah into context, and explains the overall program of skills needed to learn it. Accompanying this volume, we present a beautiful two-series set consisting of twelve booklets, as follows:

Series One: Introductory Skills in Midrash and Aggadah: To learn Midrash and Aggadah, it’s first necessary to have some basic skills in the fundamental assumptions and attitudes of the Aggadah. In this first series, there are six booklets:

► 1.1 Halachah and Aggadah
► 1.2 Types of Aggadic Content
► 1.3 Types of Aggadic Styles and Formats
► 1.4 Aggadic Clusters
► 1.5 The Revealed and the Hidden in Aggadah, Part I
► 1.6 The Revealed and the Hidden in Aggadah, Part II

► Series 2 – Specific Skills for Midrash and Aggadah: After learning the above basic skills in Midrash and Aggadah, it’s time to begin study of the skills for learning the texts themselves. In this second series, there are five booklets:

► 2.1 The World of Metaphor and Simile in Aggdah
► 2.2 For the Objective to the Subjective in Aggadah
► 2.3 Dialogues in Aggadah
► 2.4 Stories of Miracles and the Use of Exaggeration in Aggadah
► 2.5 Science and Medicine in Aggadah

The format and style of these booklets will be similar to that of the booklets in Pathways in Torah Sheb’al Peh, as described on the Main Page of this site.
